Abstract: A feature on intellligent DWDM fiber amps without dynamic gain flattening filters (GFF) were presented. Intelligent inline fiber amplifiers were able to adapt different input-channel distributions and were found necessary to implement a wavelength-agile optical communications network. The use of a passive GFF combined with a fiber-amplifier configuration offered a constant spectral gain profile over a large dynamic range and were found to be more economical, robust and efficient way to design intelligent fiber amplifiers.
