Michel Audet holds a Masters in Economics from University Laval and a diploma from École nationale d’administration (ENA) in Paris.

He served as an economist in the Ministry of Natural Resources in 1965 and 1966, and as an analyst in the Budget Office from 1968 to 1971. Within the Ministry of Finance, he was Director of Economics and Fiscal Studies from 1971 to 1974, and Assistant Deputy Minister for Budgetary and Fiscal Policies from 1974 to 1977. He was Associate Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Energy and Resources from 1977 to 1979 and in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Technology from 1979 to 1984. He was Economic Adviser to the Mayor and the Executive Committee of Quebec City in 1984 and 1985 and then the Associate Secretary General for Economic Development for the Government of Quebec in 1986 and 1987. He was Deputy Minister of Industry, Trade and Technology from 1988 to 1992. In 1992, he became the Director of editorial pages of Le Soleil newspaper. He was President and CEO of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of Quebec from 1993 to 2003.

He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Commission des partenaires du marché du travail (labour advisory board) from 1995 to 2003, of Statistics Canada from 1996 to 2003, of Jeunesses musicales du Canada (youth and music Canada) from 2000 to 2003 and of Conseil consultatif du travail et de la main-d’œuvre (labour advisory board) from 2002 to 2003.

In 2003, he was elected to the Quebec parliament as Liberal member for the constituency of Laporte. In Jean Charest’s Cabinet, he was Minister for Economic and Regional Development from April 29, 2003 to March 23, 2004, Minister for Economic and Regional Development and Research from March 23, 2004 to February 18, 2005 and Minister for Finance from February 18, 2005 to April 18, 2007.

In December 2007, he was mandated by Jean Charest’s government to negotiate a trade agreement between Quebec and Ontario and was appointed, by the Institute for governance of private and public organizations, as president of a working group examining SME’s governance.

In recent years, Mr. Audet has, amongst other responsabilities, worked with the Institute for governance of private and public organizations, been president of the Quebec governement’s working group on the reduction of administrative and regulatory burden, been a member of the Board of Directors of the Massif and a member of the Violons du Roy Foundation.
