Résumé: A comparative study has been realized in which we measured the insertion loss of mechanical splices realized with fibers cleaved by conventional mechanical cleaving method and with fibers cleaved with a liquid-cooled slab waveguide CO2 laser setup. The mechanical splice consists of a V-groove in which tested fibers were aligned and pressed toward each other while insertion loss is measured. No index matching material was used for the test but the fibers were rotated to find the minimum insertion loss for each pair of fiber tips. At this stage of the study, laser cleaving and mechanical cleaving give similar results at their optimal value but the laser approach shows more variations in the results. Possible improvements have been identified and are also presented.
