Designing state-of-the-art polarization-maintaining (PM) ytterbium-doped fibers for the current needs of the industry for pulsed lasers and amplifiers presents well-known challenges such as offering an excellent beam quality, good efficiency and a high polarization extinction ratio (PER), along with long-term reliability when operated at high power.
