The objective of this project was to design, build, and install a micromachining station using a displacement system and lasers selected by our client, the Advanced Photonics Concepts Laboratory at École Polytechnique de Montréal. The lab wanted to be able to perform various machining processes with a single, fully integrated station.
We therefore had to create a versatile system that was stable and accurate enough to achieve very specific objectives, such as writing meter-long Bragg gratings and performing two-dimensional micromachining of various materials and components.
The station INO designed, known as FABULAS, is a laser micromachining station equipped with a high-precision displacement system assembled on a granite table. The system is composed of two sections: one for writing Bragg gratings of up to a meter long using various processes, and another for two-dimensional laser micromachining of components and materials up to 300 mm x 300 mm in size.
This station includes 8 lasers with wavelengths varying between 213 nm and 10.6 µm, for powers between 0.1W and 300W. The station is made up of numerous optical and mechanical elements, including removable optomechanical modules and cameras to facilitate the use of two-laser machining processes. We also developed highly flexible sequencer software to control all aspects of the station to allow for the development of complex processes.
The FABULAS station was first assembled at INO. Once compliance testing was performed and validated, the station was disassembled and moved to the École Polytechnique lab, where it was reassembled, tested, and validated once more. The FABULAS station was a success thanks to INO’s laser system, software, and optical and optomechanical expertise, as well as the close cooperation with our client.
